Nadir Pop and Peter Pop are back with a new episode of Parenting in Films. They last discussed the Netflix movie, Fatherhood back in July. The next movie is a Hollywood one that features actor Irfan in the lead role. This is the 3rd movie that the Pop duo have featured in this series.
The Namesake is directed by Mira Nair and is based on the novel of the same name by Jhumpa Lahiri. The movie released in 2006 tells the story of the Ganguli family, Ashoke (Irfan) and Ashima (Tabu) first-generation immigrants to the United States, and their American-born children Gogol (Kal Penn) and Sonia (Sahira Nair).
Highlights from the chat are :-
- The dichotomy of the Indian and American identity
- Parents holding on to their Indian traditions
- Dealing with children’s choice as teenagers and accepting them as they become adults
- The struggles of life as a immigrant
